Loser of the Week

Welcome to Second Jumpability’s first ever Loser of the Week.  Each week, we will reward one very lucky person in sports who has taken sucking to a whole new level.  Someone who has made us question the general intelligence of the human population.  It is a prestigious honor amongst the idiots of this world.  So good luck to all participants and if you didn’t win this week, you can always cry on camera a la TO.

This week, there wasn’t much competition.  There was one person who stood well above the rest on the podium of poor performance.  His name, is Michael Gearon Jr. and he likes to play the role of the the Hawks majority owner in his free time away from his normal daily routine of sucking at life.

It was inevitable that a NBA player capable of contributing to a NBA roster would eventually bolt for Europe, but it was only fitting that it happened to your team, Michael Gearon Jr.  Your team has consistently overpaid for mediocre players or lost great players to free agency, rather than showing them the money.  You had a tremendous sixth man in Josh Childress.  A guy that can make an impact without ever having a play run for him.  He was seventh amongst all small forwards in true shooting percentage and 10th in the entire league in free throw attempts per field goal attempt last year.  He contributed in so many ways to your team’s success and so instead of even giving him a competitive contract, you decided to try to stiff him because no one else in the NBA had cap room.  Sure, you could have thrown him a 7-8 million a year contract or even just told him to his face that he WAS wanted in Atlanta and that he was important to your team’s success, but what the hell, no one else in the NBA could pay him above the Mid-Level Exception, so why should you?  As a result, you lost a completely underrated player to Greece, have Josh Smith pleading with anyone to get him out of Atlanta, and have started a trend that now has Andris Biedrins (a player needed on MY favorite NBA team) thinking about playing in Russia.  Now no NBA player is safe and we very well may lose many more solid players to Europe in the coming years.  You may have permanently damaged the NBA all by yourself.  So congratulations to you Michael Gearon Jr.!  It seems like you want the city of Atlanta to hate you so well done taking another step towards your ultimate goal.

This could start a very dangerous trend in the NBA- players bolting for quick $ and respect and owners left with nothing but 19-year olds. Either this does not take off or salaries of mid-level players is about to get a big bump up. But the cap works against this. If this is not an isolated incident, watch the owners cry for cap relief as their product is moving off-shore. Where’s the NBA be if all the foreign nationals stay away? Where’s the global merchandising gonna go? I am sure the owners are discussing this now. Well, anyways, stay thirsty my friends.

That being said, the NBA was pleased to greet foreign player in the L, so we gotta accept that good american players leave in europe to play ball!
