A Dream Fantasy Football Draft
Imagine if you had this fantasy football team in a 10-team PPR league with .5 points per completion:
QB- Carson Palmer, Brett Favre
RBs- Brian Westbrook, Larry Johnson, Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor, Chester Taylor
WRs- Braylon Edwards, Steve Smith, Brandon Marshall, Jerricho Cotchery, Anthony Gonzalez
TE- Heath Miller
K- Mike Nugent
D/St- Green Bay Packers
Wouldn’t you be beyond happy? Like hitting your blackjack at a Vegas casino when you essentially go all-in after taking a beating for 2 hours? Like getting a call from Jessica Simpson saying she is lonely and that she needs someone to stay with her tonight but that she will also promise not to talk so as not to ruin the mood? Well we got that phone call from Jessica last Thursday in our fantasy football draft. Ticket and I co-manage a team in a big money league. Despite the fact we were alerted it was a PPR league no more than five minutes before the draft took place (Big Ticket almost went Tourette’s on them), we executed our draft flawlessly (it also helped that some of the guys were idiots) and got pretty much every player we wanted.
Our weekly lineups are going to produce a bench that outscores many teams. We’ll be throwing Brandon Marshall, Maroney, or Cotchery into the flex position (Matt Berry eat your heart out). I am more excited about this than the first time I had chocolate cake (and my love of chocolate cake is well documented). Obviously there is an element of luck involved in fantasy football but we are deeper than a Chucky Cheese ball pit and more talented than Bill Bellichek is at being an asshole. I see no way we are losing.
So what is the moral of this story? Well, there are a couple. First, always play fantasy sports with guys who work in sales. They are degenerate gamblers who will take ridiculous risks (like drafting Ryan Torrain over Deangelo Williams). Second, always be on your toes in a fantasy draft. While others are chatting it up, go and figure out who your targets for your next pick are. This helped us out a lot as we always knew who was available and who was not (it was an offline draft so there was no computer to help us out). We got Brandon Marshall in the 7th round because people had forgotten about him (remember, idiots). So good luck to all in your respective fantasy football drafts and may you bring honor to the SJ community.
